DAEGU GARRISON — The Camp Carroll Paintball Range is one sure way to take a shot at having a great time. That’s primarily because the staff at the Camp Carroll Community Activity Center (CAC) can almost always be counted on to provide the best recreation and fun. Situated just steps away from the Camp Carroll ACS, the range opened for business just five years ago, and according to James Edwardsen, CAC director, interest is still going strong. Open everyday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., visitors of the facility can expect nothing short of a fantastic time during their stay.

Surrounded by tall trees and scattered brush, the paintball range is not quite a jungle, but provides an opportunity for rebound and cover moves comparable to something one might experience on a battlefield. One user of the facility likened it to a virtual battle environment, and said it was ideal for recreation and Soldier training.

Opened to authorized Department of Defense identification holders, patrons should contact the range office in advance to make reservations. For a minimal fee, patrons can acquire the paintball marker gun and mask along with 200 paintballs per person.

Range officials say that not only do Soldiers come out to enjoy the paintball experience, but so do other service members. "We've got the Marines who come out, and they seem to take the paintball game very seriously. For some, paintball may be viewed as recreational training. For others, it is combat training," said Edwardsen, the paint ball range director.

Edwardson explained there is a ceiling on how many people are allowed to play a game, and safety is always a first and foremost consideration.

"The proper number of participants in a paintball game usually runs from 8 to 10 people. That is the maximum number on each team,” he said. “However, to ensure that one doesn't have to contend with a crowded field, five to six people on a team is recommended.

“Keep in mind that there are times when units come out with upwards of 80 people to use the nearby barbecue grounds. With that influx of people, paintball becomes a part of the fun. So, when this occurs, we use caution in how groups are allowed to rotate using the range."

With safety always a consideration, range officials emphasized the importance of following the rules while on the range grounds.

"If not careful, people can be injured while playing this fun activity,” Edwardsen said. “As a safety precaution, game participants should wear long sleeves, and long pants. This is to protect them from he markings the ball will likely make on one's body. Another safety issue involves wearing a mask. Every range patron must wear a protective mask."
