Rear Adm. William D. Byrne Jr. relieved Rear Adm. Lisa M. Franchetti as commander of U.S. Naval Forces Korea, Aug. 5, during a ceremony at Collier Community Fitness Center on U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan. Franchetti will be assigned as the commander of Carrier Strike Group Nine, San Diego, California. Byrne recently served as the 85th commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy, Washington D.C. “The motto ‘We are one team’ (she said in Hangul and in English) best describes my naval experience in Korea,” said Franchetti. The U.S. Naval Forces Korea commander provides expertise on naval matters to local military commanders, including the United Nations Command, Republic of Korea (ROK), U.S. Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea.
