'The Camp Walker father and daughter dance provided an opportunity to create a tighter bond.'
DAEGU GARRISON — “A daughter may outgrow your lap, but she will never outgrow your heart” is a saying that couldn’t have been more appropriate for the “Father and Daughter Dance” held Feb. 21 at the Evergreen Club on Camp Walker. This was only the second time the event was held, and by all accounts, it was well received. Dance officials say that over 120 supporters of the activity turned out to participate in a community event that has earned overwhelming applause.
Wearing dresses fit for a princess, little girls from throughout USAG Daegu and Area IV, spent the evening in the arms of their respective father’s as they waltzed hand-in-hand around the dance floor. Ranging in ages 2 -17, this year’s celebration showed significant increase in the number of participants just one year ago. Reservations were required, and that process only added to the near flawless execution of the event.
According to Song O’Connor, Business Manager, Evergreen Club, Camp Walker, it took some time to prepare for the event, but it was time well spent. “This year we wanted to try to make things even nicer than last year. We promoted the event on AFN radio, as well as in the FMWR Outlook Magazine and Facebook.
All of the preparations that went into putting the event together seemed to have really paid off as fathers and daughters dressed to the nine, came together to spend some unforgettable quality time just enjoying themselves…and it seems like that’s just what they did. After having dined together, the duos flocked to the dance floor as the DJ’s music began to play.
Little girls giggled, and fathers smiled as they swerved and swayed to the beat. Fathers stood tall, and some got on bended knees -- looking proudly into the eyes of their precious daughters. Clearly, the moments were precious ones.
Also included in the evening activity were games that guaranteed laughter and fun. First on the game line-up was the all time favorite, musical chairs. Divided into two groups, children under 10 years of age, and children 10 years or older, it soon became apparent that listening skills and speed would determine the winner. For the little girls, it was a time of great fun. However, it would be when their fathers joined in one of the other games when lots of laughter would erupt. As part of their game challenge, fathers had the added task of trying to work a cookie from their forehead to their mouth…without using their hands. With the help of their daughters advising the best way to make their move, the interaction was as exciting as the challenge itself.
At the end of the event, there was no doubt that the 2015 Father and Daughter Dance had not only brought children and their parents together, but a community as well. USAG Daegu and the Evergreen Club staff had once again provided quality service to a quality event that will be long remembered by these little princesses and their fathers.
